O lnstituto de Serviço Social do Porto foi criado pela Associação de Cultura e Serviço Social, sob tutela da Diocese do Porto, em 1956. Em 1995 e 1996 foram criados os primeiros Mestrados em Serviço Social, no Instituto Superior de Serviço Social em Lisboa e Porto.
